Special counsel Jack Smith on Tuesday delivered remarks following the unveiling of a four-count indictment against former President Donald Trump in connection with the events of the Jan. 6, Capitol riot.

Smith's indictment included four counts, including conspiracy to defraud, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of, and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.

"Today, an indictment was unsealed charging Donald J. Trump with conspiring to defraud the United States, conspiring to disenfranchise voters, and conspiring to obstruct an official proceeding," he stated. "I encourage everyone to read it in full."

"The attack on our nation's Capitol on January 6, 2021, was an unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy," he insisted. "It was fueled by lies."

"The men and women of law enforcement who defended the U.S. Capitol on January 6 are heroes," Smith went on. "They put their lives on the line to defend who we are as a country and as a people... in this case, my office will seek a speedy trial so that evidence can be tested in court and judged."

Smith went on to tout to the presumption of innocence and noted that his indictment was solely an accusation.
