Biden convening G-7 leaders days after traveling to Ukraine

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday that President Joe Biden will convene a virtual meeting of leaders of the world’s top economies on Friday morning, just days after returning to Washington from a trip to Europe commemorating the one-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine.

Prior to delivering a speech in Warsaw, Poland, on Tuesday, Biden secretly traveled to Kyiv, Ukraine, to visit President Volodymyr Zelensky and members of the Ukrainian defense forces.

“Tomorrow morning, President Biden will gather with G-7 leaders and President Zelensky for a virtual meeting to continue coordinating our efforts to support Ukraine and hold Russia accountable for its war,” Jean-Pierre told reporters at the top of Thursday’s White House press briefing. “One year ago, this group came together, just mere hours after Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine, to impose unprecedented costs on Putin and his cronies.”

“We work together to provide Ukraine with the security, economic, budget, humanitarian, and energy assistance it needs,” she added.

Jean-Pierre confirmed that the United States plans to announce the new sanctions previewed in Biden’s Warsaw address in conjunction with the meeting, but she would not say if the security assistance would include the fighter jets requested by Zelensky.

The president notably spent a portion of his Tuesday speech directly addressing the Russian people and claiming that they are not the enemy in the West’s efforts to oppose Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Tonight, I speak once more to the people of Russia. The United States and the nations of Europe do not seek to control or destroy Russia. The West was not plotting to attack Russia, as Putin said today. And the millions of Russian citizens who only want to live in peace with their neighbors are not the enemy,” Biden said. “This war is never a necessity. It’s a tragedy. President Putin chose this war.”
