U.S. nurse Alix Dorsainvil and her young daughter are free after being kidnapped and held hostage in Haiti, the Christian charity that she works for announced Wednesday.

"It is with a heart of gratitude and immense joy that we at El Roi Haiti confirm the safe release of our staff member and friend, Alix Dorsainvil and her child who were held hostage in Port au Prince, Haiti," wrote the group, which was founded by Dorsainvil's husband, Sandro Dorsainvil.

"Today we are praising God for answered prayer!" the group said.

The organization asked for no one to contact the Dorsainvil family as they process and heal from the situation.

Dorsainvil and her daughter were kidnapped in the Haitian capital of Port au Prince in late July.

Gangs in the area often kidnap people for ransom. The U.S. State Department last month ordered all government employees to evacuate the island nation over a rise in violence.
