Millions of people across the country are set to endure freezing temperatures as Christmas fast approaches.
Much of the Midwest and the eastern United States will experience temperatures in the low single digits as an Arctic air mass makes its way south, according to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center. An estimated 55 million people are set to see temperatures of zero degrees Fahrenheit or below over the next seven days, per Axios.

“A frigid Arctic airmass will plunge southward throughout this week, bringing dangerously cold temps & wind chills across the Central & Eastern U.S.,” the agency tweeted.
By Christmas Eve, forecasts indicate temperatures as low as 4 degrees Fahrenheit in Des Moines, Iowa, to minus 2 degrees in North Dakota, with frigid temperatures stretching from Colorado to New York to Florida.
Forecasters are also warning of “bitterly cold temperatures and an intensifying storm system over the Rockies and Central Plains by midweek,” which they say could create “treacherous travel,” per the NWS.

The cold temperatures are expected to come after snow storms knocked out power in parts of the northeastern U.S. over the weekend.
Weather systems last week caused tornadoes and severe storms throughout the southeast last week, with one tornado killing a woman and her son.
