President Joe Biden has invited a drag queen who performs for children to the White House on Tuesday to attend the signing of the "Respect for Marriage Act."

The House and Senate passed a compromise bill this month that would enshrine certain protections for wedded same-sex couples into law while also bolstering religious liberty provisions. The bill does not create a nationwide right to same-sex marriage, but requires states to recognize lawful marriages from other states.

Drag queen Marti Cummings will attend the signing on Tuesday.

"To be a non binary drag artist invited to the White House is something I never imagined would happen. Thank you President & Dr. Biden for inviting me to this historic bill signing. Grateful doesn't begin to express the emotions I feel," Cummings wrote on Instagram, along with a picture of the invitation.

Cummings is a frequent host of Drag Queen Story Hour, in which he reads stories to children while cross dressing. Such events have long attracted conservative scrutiny over concerns they are inappropriate for children. Last week, Cummings addressed such criticisms in a social media post, saying "I love doing Drag Story Hour. Despite what conservatives say, this family friend event is a way to spread joy, teach acceptance & love," per Breitbart News.

Religious liberty advocates have warned that the Respect for Marriage Act's protections for conscientious objectors are minimal. Lawmakers previously defeated an amendment from Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee that would have added more authoritative language backing religious objections.
