Elon Musk fired Twitter’s general counsel Tuesday following revelations about his alleged role in suppressing the Hunter Biden laptop story on the platform.

Musk claimed that James Baker, the former deputy general counsel for the social media platform, gave “unconvincing” answers when questioned about his role in the suppression of the story.

“In light of concerns about Baker’s possible role in suppression of information important to the public dialogue, he was exited from Twitter today,” the Tesla and SpaceX CEO tweeted.

The firing comes after journalist Matt Taibbi published a wide array of internal communications over the weekend related to the suppression of the New York Post’s story on Hunter Biden’s laptop in 2020. Baker was involved in the discussions over whether the story fell under the platform’s “hacked material” policy.

One Twitter executive questioned whether the platform could “truthfully” claim that the story fell under the hacked material category.

“I support the conclusion that we need more facts to assess whether the materials were hacked,” Baker wrote in response. “At this stage, however, it’s reasonable for us to assume that they may have been and that caution is warranted.”

Baker was also involved in vetting and releasing the internal Twitter files to Taibbi and another journalist and was making it harder to release the next batch of internal documents, Taibbi tweeted Tuesday.

“The news that Baker was reviewing the ‘Twitter files’ surprised everyone involved, to say the least. New Twitter chief Elon Musk acted quickly to ‘exit’ Baker Tuesday,” Taibbi tweeted.

Before his tenure at Twitter, Baker served as the general counsel at the FBI under former Director James Comey, where he was involved in the FBI’s investigation into the alleged collusion between Russia and former President Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.
