Israel reached out to its diplomatic representations around the globe to warn of potential Iranian threats, Hebrew-language Channel 12 reported on Thursday.
The announcement came following authorities in Cyprus arresting an Azerbaijani national in a suspected hit plot on Israeli businesspeople in on the island nation last week. According to the report, Israeli embassies were asked by diplomats to remain vigilant.
On Sunday, reports surfaced that Cypriot-Israeli businessman Teddy Sagi escaped an assassination attempt after receiving a tip from Cypriot security services.
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's office released a statement characterizing the incident as an Iranian terrorist attack on Israeli businesspeople.
Despite the Israeli allegations towards Iran, the Greek-language media on the island reported that Cypriot officials did not ascribe the alleged plot to Iranian actors. Authorities also suggested that Sagi may have not been the apparent target of the attack, but rather other individuals working for the billionaire's gambling firm in the country.
The Iranian embassy in Nicosia referred to the claim of Iran's involvement as "baseless," as reported by Haaretz.
In March 2021, the National Security Council — an advisory panel for the prime minister and government — warned Israelis abroad that they could be targeted by Iran, claiming that the Islamic Republic was behind a bomb attack outside the Israeli embassy in India in January.
