Employees of social media companies give overwhelming financial support to Democrats, a conservative watchdog group found

On Thursday, the Media Research Center discovered records from OpenSecrets.org, a research group under the nonprofit Center for Responsive Politics devoted to tracking money in politics, that show employees from both Facebook and Twitter have donated over 90% of their money to Democrats in 2020.

According to OpenSecrets, 98.99% of donations from Twitter employees to “all federal candidates” above $200 were given to members of the Democratic Party. The total amount given to Democrats exceeds $347,270, while just over 1%, $3,556, was given to Republicans. This year, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden received $66,929 in donations from employees, while President Trump received $3,186.

According to the Media Research Center, the total financial support from Twitter employees specifically for Biden among all federal political candidates in 2020 topped 19%.

Facebook employees donated substantially more to Democrats in total amount in 2020 but slightly less proportionally, according to OpenSecrets. To “all federal candidates,” $2,409,464 was given to Democrats, amounting to 91.68%. Republicans received 8% of donations from Facebook employees totaling over $200, equaling $218,576.

Biden received a total of $645,152 from Facebook employees in 2020. The Republican closest to Democratic funds from the Silicon Valley giant is North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis. OpenSecrets calculated that he received $18,800 in individual contributions and $2,500 from the organization, totaling $21,300. Trump fell just shy of Tillis in total contributions from Facebook but was given $2,451 more in individual contributions.

In total, Biden’s support among all federal political candidates tops 25% from Facebook employees.

The discovery follows Twitter’s censorship of a New York Post story about Biden’s son Hunter, which prompted a backlash against the tech company. The story purported to show evidence that Hunter Biden facilitated communications between his father and Vadym Pozharskyi, who served as an adviser to the board of Ukrainian energy firm Burisma that the younger Biden was once on. The Biden campaign denied that an official meeting between the two occurred.

Twitter locked the outlet out of its account and prevented users from sharing the article in tweets and direct messaging. As of Friday morning, the New York Post remains unable to access its account.
