Trump announces new legal team to head impeachment defense

Former President Donald Trump announced a new legal team to head his impeachment defense after reports of five lawyers leaving the team.

In a Sunday evening statement, David Schoen and Bruce L. Castor, Jr. were announced as the new head lawyers for the defense.

According to the statement, Schoen has already been preparing with Trump and advisers for the trial.

“Both Schoen and Castor agree that this impeachment is unconstitutional – a fact 45 Senators voted in agreement with last week,” the statement read.

“I consider it a privilege to represent the 45th President,” Castor said. “The strength of our Constitution is about to be tested like never before in our history. It is strong and resilient. A document written for the ages, and it will triumph over partisanship yet again, and always.”

Schoen has over 30 years of legal experience in a number of states, according to his bio. He has primarily focused on the litigation of civil and criminal cases before trial and appellate courts.

Castor is the former district attorney for Montgomery County, which houses the suburbs of Philadelphia. He also had a brief stint as the acting attorney general of Pennsylvania.

Trump’s former team reportedly quit due to a disagreement over legal strategy, with the former president supposedly wanting to focus on alleged election fraud in the 2020 election. The attorneys wanted to address the legality of prosecuting a president who has left office.

Trump was impeached by the Democratic-controlled House earlier this month on a charge of “incitement of insurrection” over the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. He was first impeached by the House in late 2019 on two Ukraine-related charges and was later acquitted by the GOP-led Senate. Trump is the first president to be impeached twice.
