Texas pastor thankful parishioners had ‘opportunity to protect ourselves’ during church shooting

A minister at a Texas church where a parishioner shot and killed a man who opened fire on the Sunday congregation thanked state leaders for granting the man the right to carry a firearm to the service.

“We lost two great men today, but it could have been a lot worse,” Senior Minister Britt Farmer said Sunday. “I’m thankful our government has allowed us the opportunity to protect ourselves.”

Two people and the alleged attacker died after the gunman opened fire during Sunday services at the West Freeway Church of Christ in Tarrant County, Texas, over the weekend.

Witnesses said the gunman was shot and killed by an armed parishioner. Reports on Monday indicated that the man who took down the shooter was parishioner Jack Wilson, a 71-year-old former reserve deputy sheriff who is head of security for the church.

A recent law passed in September allows Texas residents to carry firearms openly in places of worship.
