House committee to consider impeachment articles Wednesday

.

The House Judiciary Committee will vote on two articles of impeachment against President Trump over a two-day period beginning Wednesday night.

Committee officials announced consideration would begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and restart at 9 a.m. on Thursday.

House Democrats drafted two articles of impeachment against Trump, including abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. They announced the articles on Tuesday morning in a press conference accusing Trump of “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

The articles are likely to win approval, but the process could be slowed by likely GOP amendments and objections. Republicans, who are in the minority, are outnumbered by Democrats and can only stall, not block, the articles.

“I would suspect the more extended it is will be because of Republican shenanigans,” Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, a Pennsylvania Democrat and vice-chairwoman of the Judiciary Committee, said.

Once the Judiciary Committee votes to pass the articles, they will come up for a floor vote, likely next week.

Clinton’s impeachment came after 14 hours of debate over two days.

Democrats said it is urgent for them to act quickly on impeachment in order to prevent Trump from undermining the 2020 election. They accuse Trump of withholding security aid to coerce Ukraine into investigating former Vice President Joe Biden and Democrats.
