A majority of Americans approve of how President Trump has handled the economy, feel confident about their personal finances, and believe Trump’s policies have had an impact on the country’s economic performance, according to the latest poll by CBS News.
An even 50% of polled citizens said they approved of how Trump was handling economy, with a high split between Republicans who approve, at 88%, and Democrats who do not approve, at 77%. Independents run a much tighter margin, with 52% approving of Trump versus 41% disapproving. When asked the general condition of the economy, 71% polled said the economy was at least “fairly good” and 23% said it was “very good.”
Fifty-one percent of both Democrats and Republicans said the economy is “fairly good,” with Republicans leaning more toward “very good” and Democrats leaning toward the economy being at least “fairly bad.”
Of those polled, 64% said they were at least “somewhat confident” in their personal finances over the next few months, with a majority of Republicans feeling “very confident.” A majority of Democrats were split between the 35% who reported they were “somewhat confident” and 31% who said they were “somewhat uneasy.” When asked if Trump’s policies were responsible for the state of the economy, 84% of respondents believe him to be at least partially responsible, but the poll doesn’t necessarily qualify whether the polled believed his policies directly led to a well-performing economy or one they felt less confident in.
Outside of the economy, most disapproved of Trump’s policies. On foreign policy, 55% of respondents disapproved, while 60% viewed his handling of immigration negatively. On trade with other countries, 50% approve of Trump’s efforts. There was a strong partisan split on those questions, with the majority of Republicans aligning with Trump and the majorities of Democratic and Independent voters disapproving. At least 60% of those polled disapprove of the jobs done by both Republicans and Democrats.
